There’s a world of adventure awaiting Scouts at The Durham Museum. From exploring our exhibits, to completing a merit badge or workshop, your troop is invited to experience history together with The Durham. See below to learn more about specific programming and opportunities.

Scout Group tours and workshops

Girl Scouts

The Durham Museum proudly presents several fun options for Scouts of all ages, so there’s sure to be one that’s a great fit for your group. Book a tour or workshop and provide a memorable, educational outing for your scout group!

Our Education team offers a number of Merit Badge Workshops for BSA Scouts, including: American Heritage, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Coin Collecting, Railroading, Sustainability and Textile. Cub Scouts can also complete Citizenship Adventures for the Wolf and Bear rank grade levels.

We’re also excited to offer Girl Scouts the Holidays Around the World program specifically for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors.

There is no better place to complete these programs than at The Durham Museum, Omaha’s former Union Station and newest National Historic Landmark.

If your organization is interested in booking a private tour or workshop, please reach out to us at education@durhammuseum.org or by phone at 402-444-5027.

  • Tours (guided and self-guided) are $6/scout or chaperone and troop leaders are admitted at no charge.
  • Groups must have a minimum of 10 students in order to receive the group tour rate.
  • The cost for a private workshop is a $200 flat-rate fee for up to 25 guests, scouts and adult chaperones.

Registration through Girls Scouts Spirit of Nebraska

Experience holidays from around the world right here in Omaha! Admire The Durham Museum’s own 40-foot, fully decorated Christmas tree and learn how we fit this beautiful sight into the museum each year. Then, experience holidays and traditions from other countries and cultures, followed by classroom activities and holiday-themed crafts. We’ll even explore the fun and exciting HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever exhibit!

NEW! CUB SCOUT CITIZENSHIP ADVENTURES

Join us at The Durham Museum for two unique Citizenship Adventure programs catered to Wolf and Bear rank grade levels. In these programs, Scouts will learn about the importance of good citizenship practices and how we all can contribute to our community in meaningful ways. (Note: Each program is roughly two hours in length)

Paws for Action logoJoin us as we learn about history of the American flag and participate in a flag-raising ceremony. Scouts will also explore other unique symbols of the United States and participate in a service project, all in one setting at The Durham Museum.

Merit badge workshops

The Durham Museum provides several unique BSA Merit Badge workshops throughout the year, all set in our historic building and taught by museum staff who are certified Merit Badge Counselors. Join us for badges such as American Heritage, Citizenship in the World, Textile, Coin Collecting, Railroading and Sustainability. Scouts can even complete two badges in one day! (Note: Each workshop is roughly three hours in length)

AMERICAN HERITAGE

American Heritage is all about knowing the past and how it connects to the present. The Durham Museum is the perfect combination of past and present. Housed in Omaha’s former Union Station, The Durham Museum is offering Scouts a chance to meet all of the requirements of the American Heritage badge in a one-of-a-kind historic setting!

Sign up for our Animation Merit Badge workshop and explore the history and art of animation. Learn what makes this genre larger than life and believable, then venture through our must-see summer exhibition, The Animation Academy: From Pencils to Pixels.

The Durham Museum is housed in a National Historic Landmark, Omaha’s Union Station, one of the finest examples of art deco architecture in the country. Learn about what goes into designing and building structures, create your own floor plan and discover different career paths in architecture.

CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION

November 15, 2025 (9:30AM)
$13/members and $15/non-members ($6 per chaperone)

Learn about the founding concepts of our nation embedded in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, explore a National Historic Landmark (our very own Union Station) to understand the importance of preserving historic and cultural artifacts in our community, listen to some of the most famous speeches from America’s past and write a letter to your local representative! This program is one of the 14 merit badges required to become an Eagle Scout.

CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD

September 13, 2025 (9:30AM) • April 18, 2026 (1:30PM)

Learn about societies and governments from around the world while thinking about what it means to be a global citizen. This program is one of the 14 merit badges required to become an Eagle Scout.

COIN COLLECTING

There could be no better place to complete your Coin Collecting merit badge than The Durham Museum, home of the Byron Reed Coin Collection, considered to be one of the best coin collections in the country! Hear about this amazing collection along with all of the other requirements for this special badge.

RAILROADING

September 13, 2025 (1:30PM)
$13/members and $15/non-members ($6 per chaperone)

Complete your Railroading Merit Badge at Omaha’s own Union Station! During its peak, this building welcomed over 10,000 people a day traveling by train. Scouts will explore the ins and outs of both historic and modern train travel while completing all of the requirements for this unique merit badge.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Sustainability Merit Badge Workshop explores how we can all be better stewards of the planet through sustainable practices. This program is one of the 14 merit badges required to become an Eagle Scout.

TEXTILE

Did you know that The Durham Museum is home to an incredible collection of historic textiles? Our collection, in addition to modern examples, will be used to show Scouts amazing real-life textiles and how they can be used.
