Girl Scouts

There’s a world of adventure awaiting Scouts at The Durham Museum. From exploring our exhibits, to completing a merit badge or workshop, your troop is invited to experience history together with The Durham. See below to learn more about specific programming and opportunities.

Scout Group tours and workshops

The Durham Museum proudly presents several fun options for Scouts of all ages, so there’s sure to be one that’s a great fit for your group. Book a tour or workshop and provide a memorable, educational outing for your scout group!

Our Education team is excited to offer a number of Merit Badge Workshops for BSA Scouts, including: American Heritage, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Coin Collecting, Railroading, Sustainability and Textiles. In addition, we’re also excited to offer the Girl Scouts Celebrating our Community Badge & Making Games Badge for Brownies, and the Board Game Design Challenge Badge for Daisies.

There is no better place to complete these programs than at The Durham Museum, Omaha’s former Union Station and newest National Historic Landmark.

  • Tours (guided and self-guided) are $5/scout or chaperone and troop leaders are admitted at no charge.
  • Groups must have a minimum of 10 students in order to receive the group tour rate.
  • The cost for a private workshop is a $200 flat-rate fee for up to 25 guests, scouts and adult chaperones.

All Aboard Community

Saturday, January 11, 10AM-Noon • Grades: Kindergarten – 5th

Be a landmark detective at Omaha’s original Union Station and current National Historic Landmark! Spot community symbols in a monumental art deco building from 1931. Enjoy the echoes of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Great Hall, and imagine the sounds of dozens of trains and thousands of visitors from all walks of life. Join us on an adventure as you earn the Brownie Celebrate our Community badge at the historic Durham Museum in downtown Omaha.

 PIONEER GAMES

Saturday, January 11, 1-3PM • Grades: Kindergarten – 5th

The Durham Museum houses a one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, earth lodge, and tipi! Go back in time to discover how kids from across the centuries entertain themselves. After touring our exhibits, completing a scavenger hunt in the museum, and creating your very own board game, Girl Scouts will earn the Daisy Board Game Design Challenge badge and the Brownie Making Games badge.

Registrants are asked to sign up through the Girl Scout Program Guide.

Merit badge workshops

Scouts NightThe Durham Museum provides seven unique Merit Badge workshops, all set in our historic building and taught by museum staff who are certified Merit Badge Counselors. Join us for badges such as American Heritage, Citizenship in the Nation, Textiles, Coin Collecting, and Railroading. Plus, new for 2024-25: Sustainability and Citizenship in the World. Scouts can even complete two badges in one day!

New to The Durham Museum! The Sustainability Merit Badge Workshop explores how we can all be better stewards of the planet through sustainable practices. Additionally, Scouts will get to see the exciting Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall exhibit.

American heritage

American Heritage is all about knowing the past and how it connects to the present. The Durham Museum is the perfect combination of past and present. Housed in Omaha’s former Union Station, The Durham Museum is offering Scouts a chance to meet all of the requirements of the American Heritage badge in a one-of-a-kind historic setting!


Citizenship in the nation

What is being a citizen all about? Visit a National Historic Landmark and complete all of the requirements for this badge. Join us as we explore Citizenship in the Nation!

Did you know that The Durham Museum is home to an incredible collection of historic textiles? Our collection, in addition to modern textiles, will be used to show Scouts amazing examples of real-life textiles and how they can be used.

There could be no better place to complete your Coin Collecting merit badge than The Durham Museum, home of the Byron Reed Coin Collection, considered to be one of the best coin collections in the country! Hear about this amazing collection along with all of the other requirements for this special badge.


Railroading

February 15, 2025 (9:30AM)
$13/members and $15/non-members ($5 per chaperone)

Complete your Railroading Merit Badge at Omaha’s own Union Station! During the peak of train travel in Omaha, this building welcomed over 10,000 people a day traveling by train. Scouts will explore the ins and outs of both historic and modern train travel while completing all of the requirements for this unique merit badge.
