‘Beyond the Vote’ Explores Lasting Impact of 19th Amendment

The Durham Museum will open its newest exhibition Beyond the Vote this Saturday, March 6. Over 100 years ago, women got the right to vote. This unique exhibition experience explores the lasting impact of the 19th Amendment by looking at themes at the heart of the suffrage movement—both for and against—and examining how those same themes about a woman’s place in the world continue to resonate today.

Using suffrage-era (1848-1920) artwork from our partners at the Smithsonian and Library of Congress, Beyond the Vote explores conversations surrounding votes for women that took visual form in illustration, painting and propaganda. As a continuation of that conversation, The Durham has partnered with five local artists to create contemporary works inspired by vintage suffrage pieces. The featured artists help examine the legacy of votes for women and invite us to reflect on how the woman’s vote impacts today.

Featured Artists Include: Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez, Sophie Newell, Ariel Panowicz, Celeste Butler and Renee’ A. Ledesma.

The exhibit is supported by Humanities Nebraska, The Cooper Foundation and Whitmore Charitable Trust.

To safely accommodate all guests, each person visiting must secure a ticket (for a specific date and arrival time) in advance at DurhamMuseum.org or by calling 402-444-5071. Beyond the Vote is included with museum admission.  Guests are required to wear masks and social distance while visiting the museum.
