Becoming Jane
*Not available until June 24

Take a tour through Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall exhibit on display at The Durham Museum. This interactive exhibition celebrates the life and work of Jane Goodall, who braved the unknown to provide a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives – chimpanzees. Just like Jane, students will travel through the exhibit, sketchbook in hand, ready to record findings along the way! After the tour, students will be provided prompts to continue their sketches and then share their discoveries!

Architecture Adventure

Explore hidden features in the museum’s Suzanne and Walter Scott Great Hall designed by Union Station’s architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood. Learn about the construction of the 1898 Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition and why it was not built to last. Discover what materials Plains Native Americans use to build earth lodges and tipis. Combine this new knowledge and show us a structure built out of craft materials and test it to see how much weight it supports.

Field tripPioneers on the Prairie

Travel with us on a journey back in time, to when pioneers faced hardships in their travels westward. Students will make choices along the way as we ‘travel’ via Conestoga wagon to our final log cabin destination. After the long journey, we will discuss the challenges along the way and celebrate with pioneer games played in the log cabin.

Wheels and Rails

Transportation is ever evolving. Take a look at The Durham Museum’s history of travel including trains, trolleys, cars and trucks. As you explore these different modes of travel, you will be encouraged to think about the design and function of each vehicle. After the tour, engage in building your own mode of transportation using various materials and ponder what type of vehicles will be prominent in the future and why.
